Befriending Truth
Laundry had to be done
And there was something
About some bill
That I had to pay.
Thousands of dollars
Spent and borrowed
For a piece of paper that says
I’m smart, I’m qualified.
There was not a penny
Not valuable to me
Or an edible speck
I didn’t eat.
But I think it was
The splinter I got
While walking in beach shoes
One balmy afternoon.
I couldn’t get it out
It fixed itself good
In the flesh of my foot
And only I could retrieve it.
And then I knew,
I really felt it then,
I was on my own
And what I did fell on my head.
