Because I Love You I'll Do the Dishes

Because I love you I’ll do the dishes

You know I hate the dishes but for you, I’ll do them anyway

Because I love you I will listen

And when your heart overflows and your tongue forgets to translate

I will not remind you of what is appropriate

Instead, I will learn your native language so I can listen to you

Because I love you I will trace your scars with my fingertips

I will play them like strings to an instrument

so that you can see your existence

is a melody few get to hear completely

Because I love you I will encourage you to love yourself

because even though you do I can’t quite trust myself to always cherish you

Because I love I will not promise to never hurt you and I will expect the same for you

I am human, and all I know is how to break

but I promise I will learn to build for you

Because I love you I swear the hurt will never turn to harm

and my words will never be harsh enough to draw blood

Because I love you

I will introduce you to the skeletons in my closet

and together we will wrap them in flesh and make them dance

Because I love you I will let you see my scars too

Because I love you if they scare you

I will not make you stay

Because I love you my eyes may become red as anger and blue as brokenness

but because I love you I will never let that change the way I see you

Because I love you I will always ask first

Because I love you I’ll do the messy things

The grimy things, the tedious things, the things that hurt, the things I'd rather not do, I'll do them

Because I love you I’ll do the dishes
