Because I Love You

Because I love you,

You are the thoughts that overturn my need for sleep

And the thoughts that substitute my morning coffee

You are the mind that gladly indulges in mine,

Taking my thoughts in large gulps

Allowing me to purge my inhibitions by

Assuring me that all will be okay

You are the cool autumn air I crave

In thick summer heat

My medic,

My midnight conversationalist

But, my darling,

you are also the moments that become

Static between my skin and my heart

And as you ask permission to pass through my ribcage,

My answer crawls off my tongue

but never makes it past my teeth,

Because I love you,

And I am afraid that if you change your mind about loving me

I will lose you entirely.

That you will see

I am not the human epitome of your idealism,

And leave me with fragments of you embedded in my brain

Forcing me to shake you loose from my mind

And pick bits of you from underneath my skin

One by one, until I am clean again.

At times, I wonder if my absence would

Instill the same pain in you

At times, I wonder if I have let you become

too much of my happiness

But it’s only

Because I love you

And because I love you,

I am begging you not to break me

I have a proclivity for trusting that

people who say sweet things

have equally sweet intentions

And I am praying

You do not prove me wrong

Because this is love

Right?
