because

Thu, 01/10/2019 - 14:56 -- M.Roads

You are a girl.

The words echo in my head.

Disrupting my daydreams.

The castle walls

I have been mistakenly

trapped out of.

You can't be smart.

Because you are a girl.

You have to look pretty.

Because you are a girl.

You can't have an opinion.

Because you are a girl.

You can't think.

You can't speak.

You can't breathe.

Because you are a girl.

You can't fail to meet expectations,

set impossibly high.

Because you are a girl.

You can't do what you love.

Because you are a girl.

You have to work harder,

and yet you will still receive less.

Because you are a girl.

They tell you this.

Over and over.

Nonstop.

Until you finally believe them.

Until you finally sink down to their level.

But you will not.

You will power through.

You will challenge them.

You will beat them.

And you will win.

Because you are a girl.
