The Beauty Inside Of Me
I pledge allegiance and freedom to all,
But In this America, my parents’ marriage was once against the law.
I’m too dark to be white and to light to be black.
In this America if I check biracial I don’t get a call back.
Finding work is a privilege in this land of the free,
And mixed represents something most people don’t want to see.
In this America, I must claim only one side,
Because all of me represents the racism most people try to hide.
In this America, I love to just be me,
My favorite music is rap, pop and country.
In this America, I represent a change,
That shows my parents can love and maintain.
In this America, minorities are feared,
When all they want and need is an equal share.
In this America, they say “make America great again”
That “Great” is a perception that I can’t defend.
In this America, I too am supposed to be equally free,
When I don’t fit into either side of this county.
In this America, I hope one day you can see the beauty inside of me.
