The Ballad of My Father

A golden shell a glistening

The arrow of modern day

How in this great world

Did you get thrown away?

A shimmer in the sand

Have yet to be sunk

Foam covered heroes

A brassy, frantic chunk

A weight in my hand

As I over turn the beast

Who did you tear open?

Who did you love least?

For, life is but a bubble

Clear, fragile, soft

A floating mass of power

A floating mass of thought

You’re judgment for the wicked

But why did you end here?

Did judgment day a ‘come

Somewhere close and near?

I must find out

I must find truth

There’s a story behind everything

A hope, a horror

A love, a hero

A story none the same

My journey begins

Find the truth owned by lies

This ocean, this shell, this place

Where are all the ties?

This shell is of a Remington

The king of all the kills

A cadet, a captain, a chief

Who is prince of skills?

I found the local newspaper

One man was center stage

A drug cartel hostage

His face covered the page

A shooting, a kill, a murder

Mi padre, my father my pa

A pit of horror growing

As I stared at the paper in awe

I read the page intently

He was found near the bay

From the spot where I was standing

I could imagine where his body lay

The black and white bold print

It screamed aloud the truth

A gunshot killed my father

And I had the only proof

Someone took mi padre

A Remington shot to the head

And now after a gloomy day

My pa, he laid dead

The coward threw the shell away

To be swallowed by the sea

But the leader of the drug cartel

Didn’t think of me

The initials C.C spoke loud words

Carver inside the shell

This mystery is not mysterious

These letters had more to tell

I knew the mysterious killer

Chester Chavez, a fox

I bet he won’t understand

How loud his bullet talks

The police looked at me with pride

As I solved the difficult case

But no one seemed to understand

The pride I couldn’t taste

My dad was an agent

Fighting an ongoing war

His chapter had recently ended

He made his final tour

The weight has become greater

As I over turn my hand

This shell wasn’t a hero’s

Nor from a foreign land

Mi padre has been laid down

His mystery put to rest

And through my final dream

I shall take my final test

I walk the shores alone

Disappointment covered my face

The story of my hero

Had been a total waste

Knee deep in the tide

I make my final stand

I toss the shell of fallen

Back into the waiting sand

I return her to her home

To be cleansed by the sea

The ballad of my father

Is only in memory.

A golden shell a glistening

The arrow of modern day

How in this great world

Did you get thrown away?
