Back to School

Summer passes on a sultry breeze

Windswept by sauntering time

Until at last I find myself frail and old

With all the good days far behind

Too long I’d been drowned in slumber

Caught up in my timeless dreams

That when I wake and see both fly away

They melt right into fading sunbeams

For all I’ve seen and done and known

And those I’ve loved with thought

Seeing them long passed and gone

Melts away their forget me not’s

So when you, young soul, green and new

Step on to this hallowed ground

Know that many souls have passed before you

And filled it with their lively sounds

But since now that they’re all gone and lost

And I’ve no place to go

Take this word from me, and remember

Of what came before you long ago
