Assiduous Walls

So it is said that good walls make good neighbors,

Why then, always, do we hide behind them,

And so often deny neighbors entrance to our lives, our homes, our hearts?

All the while gaps in the fence exist for passage;

If there not be cows to keep out,

We think, ‘Why have the gaps at all?’

For without cows the gaps serve not a purpose,

And will only lead to temptation,

Frustration, broken friendships

Misinterpretations herein lie,

Of holes there left by others,

And never meant by us for the sharing of sentiments,

Though, facile we would grow,

Should we allow ourselves to listen

It is a shame these walls define our relations,

If it were not for these assiduous barriers,

Much more happiness would we all experience
