Antlers and Eyes

Though I waited for you,

All along the trail my shoes made was doubt

In the form of crushed ice-crystals

Maimed by the soles of my boots.

There was a moment where I thought

I could hear you whispering,

But it just turned out to be the howl

Of a wolf, injured and dying.

Though the sound of his cry was faint,

It shook my veins,

And I wondered if it were the same

With you.

You also shake me like the cries stir

My blood; you grab my fists and shout in my face

With a mere glance.

It's enough.

As I slowly departed,

I glanced over my shoulder to see if

You arrived, but as the wind began to sting my face,

I realized that I was alone.

There was a moment where I thought

I could feel you breathing,

But it just turned out to be the breath

Of the wolf, hungry and thriving.

Though the sound of my cry is faint,

It shook my veins,

And I wondered if it were the same

With you.

I wondered if death could snub these out:

My emotions; You touch my arm and kiss my face

With a small word.

It's enough

Snow, branches, brush

Winter hush

Dear dreary dream

Dressed in dark blue

Antlers and eyes

Stare from the sky

Into my room

Whisper untrue
