The Angels

Days, weeks, and months go by

We carry out our entire lives

Rarely stopping to think about

The people we don’t know; the people without

Yet every ninety days

We somehow find a way

To put our lives on hold

To help, heal, and console

We donate time, money and things

Without even thinking what joy it brings

To hungry, sick, and even homeless

To human beings and even pets

I know this man who was once successful

But some time ago, he became quite regretful

With company cutbacks and higher costs

His health insurance was one thing lost

Shortly after, this man was diagnosed

With cancer making him it’s host

Every dime used, he thought cancer had won

The day that he had to give up his son

Everything gone except for his wife

This surely was not what he planned for his life

They lived in his truck and sometimes motels

I can only imagine it was some kind of hell

The man got sick but couldn’t afford the attention

He was told about the bus that was over in Hampton

He thought it was his cancer, so what could they do?

But a group of professionals came to his rescue

Within minutes, he was being completely examined

And quickly rushed off before anything happened

He was treated for pneumonia and sent back to his wife

He called them the angels and they saved his life

He begged his wife to visit the bus

She argued with him and made a big fuss

Finally, she went to see what they’d answer

Come to find out she had breast cancer

The angels helped get what she needed

Many times the man’s wife was treated

He told us she’s now a survivor of four years

I lie to you not, this brought me to tears

None of this should have ever happened

Especially to one of our own veterans

The government failed him in so many ways

Every day is a new day, he happily says

His wife is a teacher and he owns a farm now

But me being me, I must simply know how

With the help of his angels and all volunteers

That came to his rescue for so many years

He came to visit and see all the faces

Of one hundred and thirty that gave part of their wages

This man is a survivor of not only cancer

But also of homelessness and finding some answers

We mindlessly donate to be able to wear jeans

Without really thinking of what it all means

The help we provide is astounding and awesome

Awesome to see what our work has become
