America

I want to love you America,

but how can I when our greatest mistake as a nation

is preaching to our youth that what is in our textbooks

can never happen again

we preach intelligence

but fall easily to mere headlines

that make blanket statements

and still claim that it is news

How can I love you

when my brothers and sisters are still shamed for who they are,

when I have to fight for my rights within one day of a toupe wearing tyrant ruling my country

How can I love you

when you preach open mindedness

but somehow you have taught our youth to believe that the levels of melatonin

in our skin has the power to define and divide us as a nation

How can I love you

when a hate crime happens almost every day

How can I love you

when you are filled with so much hatred

that for someone who just wants to breathe

I cannot breathe in peace

I want to love you America,

I swear that I do

but if you want my love to grow for you

please let the good outweigh the evil
