Adam's Promise

The Sioux, the Cherokee, the wand’ring plains,

They were promised peace,

Would their children, blessed by prophecy,

Protest against the coiled serpent in the east?

The Sioux, the Cherokee, the wand’ring plains,

Each tempted by fruit,

The Sons of Adam learned their father’s lesson,

And so offered the same to the wand’ring plains.

The women walked the sacred earth,

Daughters of the ground, Maidens of life,

The Sons of Adam brought them the seed of death;

Their offspring were sorrow, hate, and lust -

The women walked the sacred earth,

And their grief so holy, so rich,

Consecrated the trail of tears.

The Sons of Adam declared their destiny,

They longed to make it manifest,

A glorious triumph, paved on bones and dirt,

Songs heralded the glory of Adam;

The Sons of Adam declared their destiny,

And to the setting sun they marched,

Marched for glittering seas.

The children danced in the flowers,

Sprites of good, hope of the sky,

To them did Adam give:

Pestilence, War, on horses enameled;

The children danced in the flowers,

And like Adam’s brood long ago,

In the flowers they died.

At last did the Sons of Adam win,

Their trumpets cried out victory --

The promise fulfilled, the sons were crowned,

Lords of the land and sea;

At last did the Sons of Adam win,

But their boots did not track mud,

The heels of Adam were stained by blood.
