Ace

BEEP! BEEP! Covers over my head and burrow into that cool pillow.

Too early. Too late last night. Too much work, too much think about.

Then, I remember.  I remember her. Her smile, her smell, her limbs like a willow

She sways, she sits so elegantly in that swiveling swivel chair.  I want to shout,

“Hey, please…um, well, hi.” Because the words are there in my heart but just

will not form on my lips or even in my brain, but I know I have them and just

Need to find the way to say how I so love her existence.

Her habit of tap, tap, tapping that pen cap on her teeth

The scritch scratch of nail in hair and her sense, her presence

In this place.  In this place, everything gets so underneath

My skin, but she’s my ointment, my cure for the scratch.

Just a note, a little post-it stuck to her board to catch

Her attention today, my day, my turn to say ‘I love you.’

“The lights dim in the shine of your face.”

She reads and then wads a paper or two

To toss at my head, and says, “Hey, Ace.

I love you too.”
