ABOUT A BIT OF SEED

Sat, 01/15/2022 - 20:29 -- JPGeo

They drop in from time to time to have a bit of seed,

Cock their heads, look my way then go about their feed.

Regal cardinal, masked and dressed to greet the pope.

Will all that red attract a mate, one may only hope.

Cowbird, you rascal, laying eggs in someone else’s nest.

This habit that you have is one we birders quite detest.

Have your seed but make it quick before I lose my tongue.

Despicable is what I say, letting another raise your young.

Godfrey Daniel, my little chickadee, the millet is for you.

I know you like it best, do sit a spell and have a few.

Oh, and if you have a mind to, why don’t you take a splash?

Me, I’ll just have my whiskey but it was nice of you to ask.

Confounded jay, go ‘n pick for bugs about the grass.

The thistle’s for the songbirds and not your raspy ass.

Naked jay bird, get on with you and your loud and raucous way.

But before you go, redeem yourself and chase that squirrel away.

He overeats then taunts the dog as if he wants to play.

If beagle dogs could fly, that squirrel would rue the day.
