“Monachopsis”
The melody no longer rings the same,
and no, the harmony is not to blame.
It’s the years spent in an orchestrated song
filled with root beer chords, where the days are long.
Adagio— her fingers play the chords with no aim
Heart beats in quarter notes, another smile to feign
a silent plea; the sun's rays, like yesterday, wane.
Andante—she plays away from the original key beating the gong
The melody no longer rings the same.
It’s realizing life is not a prize to be framed
playing a piece, rigid and constrained
Accelerando—she changes the rhythm to sway along
to the tides of a new serenade; headstrong.
There have been changes but no shame
This melody shall never ring.
