“Banner, Do You See Your People Crying?”

Yes, I can see them by the sunset’s gloom,

Those who I enveloped with my undulating figure,

Whose many shapes and colors through the presence of doom,

Within the adversities of time, I’ve observed transfigure;

And the blows of hatred, the bigotry unfurling for everyone,

Proved time and time again that they shall overcome;

Oh, why do my people fight without retraction

In what I see could be the land of fairness and the home of compassion?

On the streets, through the smogs of negligence,

Where insults and abuses in loud agitation circulate,

Is this my crowd, which the cameras in the midst of violence

As they shake ferociously, reveal to be turbulent?

I look on as brothers and sisters now catch onto rage.

The moon now illuminates the dead faces to appear on tomorrow’s front page!

What agony! This is my people fighting without retraction

In what I see could be the land of fairness and the home of compassion!

So where is that greatness that Americans once pledged to me,

That Ross prayed for while sowing my broad stripes and bright stars?

Oh, eagles, carry on my plea!

For they are letting intolerance mantle them and letting me fall apart!

Everyone could be saved from the vicious grips of prejudice,

If only they’d learn about respect for the sake of benevolence!

Must my people fight without retraction

In what I see could be the land of fairness and the home of compassion?

Oh, eternal may the moments be, when my people see each other beyond

What they look like, whom they pray to, or whom they love!

May this land, blessed with so much beauty to dote upon,

Finally know what equality and peace consist of;

Then can truly my people say that this is where freedom buds

And our motto be, “E pluribus unum!”

My people, do not fight without retraction

In what I see could be the land of fairness and the home of compassion!
