‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ but i promise it’s not unconditional

‘don’t judge a book by its cover,’ like you’re the epitome of social tolerance and unadulterated acceptance. ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ they say after calling that girl a dyke because she likes to wear pants. ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ but you still hold your keys between fingers of a clenched fist after seeing a black man board your elevator.

but ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ becomes utter bullshit when you realize that the group of college boys who speed up when they see you’re alone on the street at night might be something to avoid. ‘don’t judge a book by its cover,’ but when it’s a guy with the confederate flag plastered on the back of his truck, i don’t really care to read past the first page.

but i guess ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’ only applies to the white man in a court of law when he swears up and down that the girl on the prosecution side doesn’t know what she’s talking about.
